In Kansas City, Gathr Preview Series will be hosted by the wonderful Fine Arts Theatres. We kick off the film series on Sunday, 4/28/13 at 7:00pm at Glenwood Arts with THE ICEMAN starring Michael Shannon, Ray Liota and Winona Ryder. We'll have a new movie each week. Members can attend each screening plus enjoy a host of other perks.

Inspired by actual events, the suspense thriller The Iceman follows notorious contract killer Richard Kuklinski (Michael Shannon, Take Shelter) from his early days in the mob until his arrest for the murder of more than 100 men. Appearing to be living the American Dream as a devoted husband and father, in reality Kuklinski is a ruthless killer-for-hire. When finally arrested in 1986, neither his wife nor daughters have any clue about his real profession. The Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl crossed the Pacific ocean in a balsa wood raft in 1947, together with five men, to prove that South Americans already back in pre-Columbian times could have crossed the sea and settle on Polynesian islands. After financing the trips with loans and donations they set off on an epic 101 days long trip across 8000 kilometers, while the world was waiting for the result of the trip. The film tells about the origin of the idea, the preparations and the events on the trip. Kon-Tiki was named after the Inca sun god, Viracocha, and "Kon-Tiki" is an old name for this god. Heyerdahl filmed the expedition, which later became the Acaemy award winning documentary in 1951, and wrote a book about the expedition which was translated into 70 languages and sold more than 50 millions copies around the world. Heyerdahl believed that people from South America could have settled Polynesia in pre-Columbian times, although most anthropologists now believe they did not. Anyway he proved it was possible, by using only the materials and technologies available to those people at the time. The tense new thriller The Reluctant Fundamentalist, directed by Mira Nair (The Namesake, Monsoon Wedding) and based on Mohsin Hamid's bestselling novel, begins in Lahore in 2011. At an outdoor café a Pakistani man named Changez (Riz Ahmed) tells Bobby (Liev Schreiber), an American journalist, about his experiences in the United States. Roll back ten years, and we find a younger Changez fresh from Princeton, seeking fortune and glory on Wall Street. The American Dream seems well within his grasp, complete with a smart and gorgeous artist girlfriend, Erica (Kate Hudson). But when the Twin Towers are attacked, a cultural divide slowly begins to crack open between Changez and Erica.
